Key Stage 2
Key Stage 2 covers Year 3 to Year 6 and the age range from 7 years through to 11 years. Between these ages, children develop greater independence, greater self-confidence and a greater awareness of the wider world. It is our aim to develop these facets of life and help children to develop self and community awareness.
Key stage 2 classes are supported by classroom assistants as well as from specialist teachers for P.E., Swimming, Music, and Arabic and Islamic Studies (Muslim pupils only). French is introduced at Year 3.
The curriculum broadly follows the English National Curriculum. It is our aim to provide a broad, balanced, creative and relevant curriculum allowing all pupils to develop at their appropriate level. Every effort is made to ensure learning is enjoyable and worthwhile, that the school provides a stimulating private experience and employs a variety of teaching strategies.
Key Stage 1
The Learning Journey continues from the Foundation Stage into Key Stage 1. We aim to provide our pupils with a broad based, creative introduction to the English National Curriculum, developing skills, knowledge, understanding and values that can be built upon in the next Key Stage.
Each of our Key Stage 1 classes has a teacher and a classroom assistant as well as support from specialist teachers for P.E., Swimming, Music, and Arabic and Islamic Studies (Muslim pupils only)
We believe that the key to success lies in commitment and enjoyment and we endeavour to foster a good work ethic and provide a stimulating and interesting environment in order to develop a love of learning.
Pupils are encouraged to respect others but at the same time value their own contributions and know that they are recognised individuals.
Curriculum Introduction
Pupils follow the Early Years Foundation Stage Curriculum which leads on seamlessly to the English National Curriculum, modified to include the richness of the UAE culture.
The National Curriculum is made up of blocks of years, known as key stages:
FS1 and FS2 are known as the Early Years Foundation Stage
Year 1 and Year 2 are known as Key Stage 1
Years 3 to 6 are known as Key Stage 2

Early Foundation Stage
The Early Years Foundation Stage
The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) is for children aged three to five, and covers the years they spend from the beginning of nursery or pre-school (FS1) to the end of Reception class (FS2) in primary school. This is recognised as a distinct stage of learning, when children learn best through active play which builds on their individual needs and interests. The EYFS provides an important link between home and the more tightly structured National Curriculum programme which starts when the children reach Year 1
Young children enter school with a wide range of different experiences. The aim of the Foundation Stage at Al Ain International School is to provide a well planned and resourced curriculum which takes each child's learning forward.
The learning for young children should be a rewarding and enjoyable experience in which they explore, investigate, discover, create, practise and consolidate their developing knowledge, skills, understanding and attitudes. During the Foundation Stage at Al Ain International School, these aspects of learning are brought together effectively through carefully planned and structured activities that are fun, relevant and motivating for each child. The children's learning takes place in a stimulating and interesting environment, using both indoor and outdoor areas.
The Foundation Stage curriculum is organised into six areas of learning:
- Communication, Language and Literacy.
- Knowledge and Understanding of the World.
- Creative Development.
- Mathematical Development.
- Personal, Social and Emotional Development.
- Physical Development.
Play is important in fostering and developing young children's learning and it underpins the delivery of the EYFS. It is through play that children develop intellectually, creatively, physically, socially and emotionally.
In each area of learning, there are expectations of achievement known as the Early Learning Goals. These form the knowledge, skills and understanding that children should have acquired by the end of the Foundation Stage.
